Mercedes-AMG highly motivated for the start of the US season with the Daytona 24 Hours

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship gets underway with the classic 24-hour endurance race at Daytona: three Mercedes-AMG GT3 are participating in the ‘Rolex 24 At Daytona’ (27-28 January) in order to build on the successful result with third place last year. The winning team in the 2017 Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup (NAEC), Mercedes-AMG Team Riley Motorsport will again be taking on the full season in the North-American race series with a Mercedes-AMG GT3. Like in 2017, SunEnergy1 Racing has also opted for the reliability of the race car from Affalterbach. P1 Motorsports is rounding out the strong line-up at Daytona International Speedway with another Mercedes-AMG GT3. On top of that, the new Mercedes-AMG GT4 is making its debut in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge at Daytona. In the four-hour race on Friday (26 January), nine cars will be competing to make it a successful maiden outing.

Mercedes-AMG wins a thrilling Dubai 24-hour race with BLACK FALCON

The 2018 season starts with a victory for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport: in the 24-hour race at Dubai, the Customer Racing Teams with the Mercedes-AMG GT3 scored both the overall victory and the A6-PRO and A6-AM class wins. In the #2 car, Abdulaziz Al Faisal (KSA), Yelmer Buurman (NED), Hubert Haupt (GER) and Gabriele Piana (ITA) scored the fourth overall win for BLACK FALCON and Mercedes-AMG Motorsport in Dubai. In the A6-AM class, Customer Racing Team SPS automotive-performance secured victory. The much-noticed 24-hour race debut of the new Mercedes-AMG GT4 also ended successfully with a podium finish in the GT4 class.

A strong opening part for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport in the marathon at Dubai Autodrome

The 24-hour race in Dubai is on in full swing. On Friday afternoon, a total of 89 cars took on the first endurance racing highlight of the new calendar year, among them ten Mercedes-AMG GT3 and three Mercedes-AMG GT4. During the first hours of the race, the teams with the cars from Affalterbach showed a promising performance: with 178 laps of the 5.390 kilometres long circuit completed, five Mercedes-AMG GT3 are within the top ten of the overall standings. In the GT4 class, the Customer Racing Teams also have good perspectives while running in second, third and fifth place.

The first highlight of the 2018 motorsport season has started in a promising way for Mercedes-AMG: in qualifying for the 24-hour race in Dubai, three Mercedes-AMG GT3 made it into the top ten. It was Jeroen Bleekemolen with the #3 car of the BLACK FALCON team who posted the fastest time of the cars from Affalterbach and qualified second on the grid as a result, immediately followed by Yelmer Buurman (both NED) in the team’s sister car with #2. Another Dutchman rounds out the top ten result: Christiaan Frankenhout set the ninth-fastest time in qualifying with the #1 car of last year’s Pro-AM winners Hofor Racing.
