In the first hours of the endurance racing classic at the Nürburgring, the Mercedes-AMG GT3s presented themselves from their best angle: having started from pole position, the #2 Mercedes-AMG Team BLACK FALCON car managed to rack up 30 laps in the lead until an accident during the night led to the early retirement. The further GT3 cars by BLACK FALCON, Mercedes-AMG Team MANN-FILTER and GetSpeed Performance completed largely faultless laps and established themselves at the front of the field until the night set in.

The 24-hour race at the Nürburgring has got underway. The Mercedes-AMG GT3s and Mercedes-AMG GT4s have started the marathon race without any major incidents. The first scheduled pit stops and driver changes having been completed, five cars from Affalterbach are in the top eleven of the 155 cars strong field. In the opening stages, the #2 car of the Mercedes-AMG Team BLACK FALCON in particular racked up laps in the lead.

Mercedes-AMG starts with front row lock-out for Nürburgring 24-hour race

The 47th ADAC Total 24h-Rennen will get underway with an optimal situation for Mercedes-AMG. In top qualifying on Friday evening, Maro Engel (GER) secured pole position with a perfect lap in his #2 BLACK FALCON Mercedes-AMG GT3, closely followed by Maximilian Götz (GER) with the #48 MANN-FILTER Mercedes-AMG GT3. Mercedes-AMG drivers Maximilian Buhk in sixth place, Luca Stolz in eighth place and Jan Seyffarth (all GER) in ninth place also made it into the top ten of the shootout. The two Mercedes-AMG GT4 in the field of 158 cars are also starting the classic endurance race from good grid positions in their respective classes.

The participants for top qualifying of the ADAC Total 24h-Rennen have been determined: all seven Mercedes-AMG GT3s will be taking part in the shoot-out on Friday evening to decide on the best starting grid positions – an important aspect for success in the endurance racing classic at the Nürburgring. With starting numbers #2 and #3 (Mercedes-AMG Team BLACK FALCON), two cars had already secured their slots prior to the race weekend. The further five GT3s from Affalterbach claimed their tickets in the two qualifying sessions on Thursday and Friday. Prior to the day’s endurance programme, the Mercedes-AMG Fan Base was the venue for a world debut: the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach presented its new Mercedes-AMG GT3, a consequent further development of the successful customer racing car. Shortly after that, the autograph and interview session with the Mercedes-AMG drivers attracted numerous visitors to the brand experience world.

Mercedes-AMG is further expanding its programme for Customer Racing Teams and introduces the new Mercedes-AMG GT3. The car is a consequent further development of the globally successful customer racing car from Affalterbach. Next to its new looks, it comes with numerous optimisations that are taking the characteristics of the current GT3, appreciated by drivers and teams, to a new level. At the same time, they contribute to further reduction of the running costs and allow for the motorsport involvement of the Customer Racing Teams to be set up in an even more effective and profitable way. The new race car will be shown in public for the first time during the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. After an intense test and trial phase, delivery of the new Mercedes-AMG GT3 to the teams will start at the end of 2019. In 2020, the tenth anniversary of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing, the car enters its first season of competition.

Impressions from night qualifying

After the aborted free practice in the afternoon, qualifying 1 in the evening gave a first assessment for the teams in the 24-hour race. At the Nürburgring that had dried out in the meantime, the drivers with the Mercedes-AMG GT3s used the three-hour session to complete their two mandatory qualifying laps and to continue work on the fine-tuning of the set-up. In the process, the teams also shone with strong lap times: in total, four Mercedes-AMG GT3s ended up in the top eight. Raffaele Marciello posted the fastest time of the entire field in 8m24.801s. Thus, the #48 of the Mercedes-AMG Team MANN-FILTER makes a big step towards top qualifying. However, the slots for the shootout will only be determined after second qualifying on Friday afternoon. A turbulent start of the long race weekend in the ‘Green Hell’

The ADAC Total 24h-Rennen got off to an official start with first free practice on Thursday afternoon. However, at the combination of the Grand Prix track and the Nordschleife, the seven Mercedes-AMG GT3s and two Mercedes-AMG GT4s were hardly able to fine-tune the set-up for the season highlight. Prior to the scheduled end of the session, race control decided to stop the action with the red flag. Fabian Schiller (GER), who posted a fast lap time in the early stages, was the fastest with the cars from Affalterbach in second place with the #17 GetSpeed Performance car.

Prior to the sporting programme that gets underway on Thursday (20 June), the crews presented themselves today during the Adenauer Racing Day. From the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the parade of cars led to the city’s market square where the fans, among others, got to see the cars from Affalterbach from up close. A total of seven Mercedes-AMG GT3s and two Mercedes-AMG GT4s will be taking on this year’s 47th running of the classic endurance race. On Thursday, the on-track action starts with free practice (13.20-15.00 hrs), followed by first qualifying in the evening (20.30-23.30 hrs).
